Whta Are Bed Bug Bites
Extreme Bed Bug Bites
Bed Bug Bites: With the re-emergence of bed bugs in almost all the nooks and cranies of homes in recent time, there have been several recent reviews of the dermatological reactions caused by bed bugs as a result of feeding on the blood of humans by inserting a sharp proboscis, or beak, into the victim’s skin. However, both male and female bed bugs bite and ingest blood. The blood meals are necessary for the female to reproduce and the juveniles to develop.
Painless Bed Bug Bites
Thus, the bites themselves usually are painless, and the host typically is not disturbed while bed bugs feed. Symptoms after being bitten by bed bugs vary from one person to another. Many develop an itchy red welt within a day or so of the bite. Others have little or no reaction. Sometimes the reaction might be delayed days or even weeks after the actual bite occurs, which can make it difficult to determine when or where bites actually occurred. But then exhaled carbon dioxide, body heat and other chemical cues attract bed bugs to their hosts. Bed bugs inject saliva containing an anticoagulant and an anaesthetic when they bite, and this causes the bite area to become irritated. Thus, feeding usually takes about five to 10 minutes. Typically, a small welt develops at the site of each bite. Rows of three or four welts are characteristic of bed bug bites.
Can Bed Bugs Transit Disease?
Though not known to carry disease, bed bugs can substantially reduce the quality of life by causing discomfort, sleeplessness, anxiety, and embarrassment. The droppings of bed bugs pollute homes with allergens and may cause severe allergic reactions and asthma in some individuals. Besides, some health experts, the added stress from living with bed bugs can have a significant impact on the emotional health and well-being of certain individuals.
Conventional insect repellents, which are normally used to deter mosquitoes and ticks, do not appear to be as effective against bed bugs. Therefore, attempting to avoid being bitten by applying insect repellent at bedtime is not recommended. Sleeping with the lights-on is also not likely to deter hungry bed bugs, as they will adjust their feeding cycle to the host’s sleeping patterns. And that why it is important to note that not all bite-like reactions are due to bed bugs.
